Topsoil & soil preparation

Topsoil installation and soil preparation service to improve structure, drainage and create a durable lawn in Gatineau and Outaouais.

Soil preparation and topsoil addition are the foundation of every durable landscaping project. At Hortiplan Outaouais, we prepare and level the land for grass implantation, sod installation, hydraulic seeding (hydroseeding), shrub planting and landscaping.

Adequate soil structure allows roots to establish well and ensures the durability of your landscaping.

At Hortiplan Outaouais, we never work only on the surface.

Because poorly prepared soil creates problems for years, while well-structured soil creates a durable foundation for everything that grows afterwards.

We also offer a topsoil installation service in Gatineau and Outaouais to correct poor terrain, improve soil structure and create an ideal base for grass, sod, hydraulic seeding and planting.

Why soil structuring changes absolutely everything

A beautiful lawn starts beneath the surface. Compact, hardened, or poorly structured clay soil prevents:

  • water from penetrating well
  • oxygen from reaching the roots
  • nutrients from being absorbed
  • roots from descending deeply

Result:

  • weak lawn
  • rapid yellowing
  • dead zones
  • superficial roots
  • excessive watering

Structuring the soil means solving the problem at the source — not just correcting the appearance.

At Hortiplan, we treat the cause. Not just the symptom. What you don't see beneath your lawn... makes all the difference.

The Hortiplan Method - Complete Soil Preparation & Structuring

This method is used before any sod installation, seeding, renovation or hydraulic seeding.

Improve your soil
1

Complete soil analysis

  • structure
  • compaction
  • humidity
  • drainage
  • pH
  • soil type (sand, loam, compacted clay soil)

Objective: adapt interventions to the exact reality of your land, not apply a generic recipe.

2

Removal of undesirable layers

  • old lawn
  • thick thatch
  • dead roots
  • compacted debris

We start again on a clean, healthy, and stable base.

3

Grinding & crumbling of existing soil - Hortiplan signature step

This is where our method surpasses 95% of companies.

We proceed to:

  • fragmentation of compacted clay soil or loam
  • disaggregation of hardened soil plates
  • creation of a loose, breathable, and deeply workable zone
  • a real increase in rooting depth
  • better water infiltration, without stagnation

New soil placed on a hard base remains superficial. We create a living, stable, and durable foundation.

4

Addition of 4 to 8 inches of enriched soil

We add a real functional layer, not a simple veil:

  • structured soil
  • rich in organic matter
  • leveled with professional precision

It is this thickness that allows for deep rooting and real durability.

5

Integrated natural soil amendments

According to the real needs of the land:

  • organic compost
  • mycorrhizae
  • basalt
  • oxygenated compost tea and biostimulants

These elements:

  • nourish the soil
  • stimulate microbial life
  • accelerate rooting
  • increase the overall resistance of the land

Before / After soil structuring

Before

  • hard and compact soil
  • water runoff
  • superficial roots
  • yellowing
  • dead zones
  • excessive watering
  • fragile lawn

After

  • aerated and structured soil
  • optimal water infiltration
  • deep roots

  • better drought resistance
  • less maintenance
  • dense and durable lawn

Frequently asked questions about topsoil and soil preparation

Have another question? Feel free to contact us.

Do you always restart the soil completely with this service?

Yes. This service is used when starting fresh. It includes the removal of undesirable layers, deep cultivation of the existing soil, the addition of enriched soil, and the integration of natural amendments.

Why should clay or compacted soil be prepared before sowing grass?

Compacted clay soil prevents water, air, and nutrients from circulating well. Without deep decompaction and structuring, roots remain superficial and the lawn becomes fragile, even with beautiful sod or good seeds.

Why do you add 4 to 8 inches of enriched soil?

Because this thickness creates a true functional root zone. A simple addition of 1 or 2 inches is insufficient to ensure good rooting, efficient water management, and long-term durability.

Do you only use standard black earth?

No. We use a structured and enriched soil, adjusted with organic compost, basalt, mycorrhizae, biostimulants and compost tea as needed. The goal is to nourish living soil, not just to fill a hole.

Is this step mandatory before laying sod?

Yes, when the old lawn is removed and the surface is restarted. Sod laid on poorly structured soil will have weak rooting, a shorter lifespan, and more problems in the medium term.

Should the soil be prepared before hydraulic seeding (hydroseeding)?

Yes, absolutely. Hydraulic seeding is very effective, but only if the soil is well structured, compaction is corrected, and the soil is well leveled and enriched. Otherwise, germination and durability are compromised.

Does this method replace aeration or dethatching?

Yes, because here we restart the soil in depth. Aeration and dethatching are surface methods used when the lawn is preserved. Soil structuring is a complete intervention at the base of the terrain.

How long after soil preparation can turf be laid or seeds sown?

Generally, the soil is ready immediately after preparation, which allows for quick follow-up with laying turf, hydraulic seeding, or renovation work.

Is this method ecological?

Yes. It is based on respect for living soil, the use of natural amendments, durable improvement of soil structure, and reduction of future water and fertilizer needs.

Do all terrains need this complete preparation?

No. This service is recommended when the soil is very compacted, starting from scratch, the lawn is too damaged to be corrected by overseeding, or as part of a new project.
